Red Baron 3D Multiplayer Basics

October 5, 2000

Introduction

This is a quick and dirty guide on how to patch up and play Red Baron 3D multiplayer. It reflects my experience with patching and playing Red Baron 2D after months of not touching the game. This is by no means an exhaustive guide, and does not cover tactics, planes, squads, or online behavior. For that type of information and other questions please visit Wings of Honor, which has a section dedicated to Red Baron.

21 Basic Steps from Red Baron 2 to Red Baron 3D Multiplayer and Beyond
  1. Install Red Baron 2 from your CD. The 213 MB "Large" install is recommended.
  2. Apply the RB3D Super Patch. This file is a self-extracting .exe, and will install itself to the correct directory after you click on it.
  3. Apply the RB3D Server Patch This will let you see the multiplayer servers.
  4. Create a shortcut to the file baronmmp.exe which is located in your Sierra\RedBaronII directory. MMP stands for "Massively Multi-Player." It's also refered to as "Red Baron II/3D Arena Multiplayer" if you run it from your Windows Start Menu.
  5. Make sure you still have the Red Baron CD in your CD-ROM drive. Unless you have the "No CD" hack you must have the game CD in your CD-ROM drive. You can find the No-CD file at Wings of Honor.
  6. Start up the game.
  7. Under Preferences select Glide if you have a Voodoo/3dfx video card.
  8. Create a pilot and click on Connect.
  9. You should see a list of servers that are running Red Baron 3D. If not, exit and restart.
  10. Select a server name and then click on "Join."
  11. After viewing the server settings in the "Status" window you can select a different plane, team, or airfield.
  12. Click on "Fly Now" at the bottom of the screen.
  13. To bring up the settings window once the game is started Right Click the mouse anywhere inside the window.
  14. There is a known problem with Voodoo 3 video cards and the cursor in the game. It will turn the cursor into a blob and clicking on the right menu item can be a chore. No fix is planned at this time that I'm aware of.
  15. To start your engine press the Tab key.
  16. If you are running a Voodoo/3dfx card you can use a transparent cockpit by pressing Alt-T.
  17. The Backspace key opens up the chat window. The Escape or Return key exits the chat window.
  18. Shift-N will (sometimes depending on your connection etc.) show the players names above the planes.
  19. 'T' will target the last person who shot at you.
  20. There is an on-line help file that you can view for more information. You can get to it from the Windows Start Menu/SIERRA/Red Baron 2/Arena Multiplayer Online Help.
  21. To add a gunsight read the file "SIERRA\RedBaronII\RB2sight.txt." More gunsights can be found at Cuda's Gunsights.
