Red Baron II Version 1.6 Readme File 20 July 1998 ******************************************************** About This Document: To view this document with correct formatting, Select the Edit menu above and choose Word Wrap. Thank you for purchasing Red Baron II. This document contains last-minute information about Red Baron II and other information about the program not found in the Help File, as well as information on new features and changes made since version 1.0. This README file includes information that pertains to general problems and questions you may have concerning the game or your computer. Should you experience any problems with Red Baron II, please refer to this file for additional help on answering questions about the game and solving technical difficulties. ******************************************************** Notes on the 1.6 patch: If you have a force feedback joystick or have problems calibrating your joystick see II. Joystick Issues, below. Campaigns and single missions created with versions previous to the 1.5 patch are NOT compatible with this version. The patch automatically moves your campaign and user-created single missions to Old_camp and Old_sing respectively in the RedBaronII directory. This patch is an all-encompassing patch, and should properly update any version of RBII. If you have installed the patch and are still having problems, uninstall and reinstall Red Baron II before attempting to reapply the patch. Multiple installations: Having more than one version of Red Baron II installed on your machine at a time can cause the game not to function properly. We highly recommend that you have only one copy of Red Baron II installed on your machine. In order to avoid problems, if you have previously installed RBII on more than one location on your machine you should uninstall RBII using the Red Baron II Uninstaller, found on the Red Baron II entry on your start menu. You should then delete any files that still remain in any directories where RBII had been located. After this, reinstall RBII and then apply the patch. ******************************************************** TABLE OF CONTENTS I. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS II. JOYSTICK ISSUES III. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES IV. PLAYING THE GAME V. GENERAL GAME ISSUES VI. CONTACTING SIERRA I. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ----------------------- Minimum Pentium 133 16 MBs RAM 125 MB Hard Drive Space** Mouse SVGA 256 colors 4X CD-ROM Recommended Pentium 200MHz 32 MB Ram 8X CD-ROM Windows Compatible Sound Card Joystick Multiplayer Options 28.8 Modem, Internet, IPX and TCP/IP Network supported. 3D Acceleration 3DFX based, Glide compatible accelerator card. Extra texture memory and Voodoo II supported. Supported Rudder Pedals, Throttle Controls, Thrustmaster FCS & WCS, Microsoft Side Winder 3D Pro ** NOTE The minimum installation of Red Baron 2 requires about 45 megabytes for the game; however, the game requires that Windows has at least 80 MB free hard drive space at all times. Windows will use this free space for memory swapping. If there is less than 80 MB hard drive space free on the Windows drive after installation then you will receive a warning requesting that you should free up more hard drive space. II. JOYSTICK ISSUES ---------------------- Because of difficulties switching video modes while in Glide and Direct Draw modes, many pop-up system requests had to be disabled in these modes. One of these requests was the system's joystick calibration routine. Because of this, you can no longer calibrate joysticks while in the game. In general this doesn't cause any difficulties, but it does make you need to take one extra step when enabling force feedback joysticks. To enable your force feedback joystick, go to the Preferences, select Graphic Setting, then go to the Graphics Options screen and click the checkbox to run the sim in Windowed mode. While in the sim in Windowed mode, right click to bring up the options menu and choose to calibrate your joystick. You should now be able to turn on force feedback support. Once you have done this, you can exit the simulation and return your Grapic Setting to Glide or Direct Draw mode. Note also that by default the realism options has Torque enabled. This will cause most aircraft to tend to roll to the left. This is normal and not a joystick calibration problem. To verify that your joystick is operating correctly in RBII, you may disable torque in the Realism Options. III. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ---------------------------- - INSTALLATION How to install Red Baron 2 If AutoPlay is enabled on your system, insert the game CD and wait for the AutoPlay menu to appear on your screen. This can take up to one minute. When the menu appears click on the install button. You will then receive some onscreen instructions to follow. After the installation is complete it may be necessary for you to restart your computer. If AutoPlay is disabled, click on the Windows 95 START button located on the desktop, choose RUN from the menu. In the space provided type D:\setup.exe (where D is the drive letter for your CD-ROM). Click on "OK" or just press ENTER on your keyboard. You will then receive some onscreen instructions to follow. After the installation is complete it may be necessary for you to restart your computer. Installation Sizes Small -- 125 MB Total (45MB for data plus 80 MB free hard drive space.) Medium -- 210 MB Total (130MB for data plus 80 MB free hard drive space.) Large -- 295 MB Total (215MB for data plus 80 MB free hard drive space.) Windows requires some free hard drive space in order to use its virtual memory management system (swap file). Without this free space Windows may not run efficiently. Red Baron 2 requires that you have at least 80 MB free on your Windows drive so that Windows will have the proper system environment for the game to run on. If you have manually set your virtual memory settings, make sure that your setting is for at least 80 MB. Virtual memory settings can be found in the Control Panel under SYSTEM. Click on the Performance tab and then on the Virtual memory button. Sierra recommends that you let Windows 95 manage your virtual memory settings. If you choose to run with less than 80 MBs free hard drive space, you may experience poor performance in Red Baron 2. You may experience game crashes if the virtual memory size is extremely low. - Freeing up Hard Drive Space Removing programs you no longer use any more is the best way of freeing up hard drive space. To uninstall most programs you can use the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS utility located in the Control Panel. This solution will only help if the programs are located on the Windows 95 Drive (or the drive that is being used for Virtual memory - See Windows 95 help for more information on virtual memory). The recycle bin located on the Windows 95 Desktop also may be full. To empty the recycle bin, right click on the Recycle Bin. A menu will appear with the option to "empty recycle bin". Click this option to free up hard drive space. - UNINSTALLING RED BARON 2 There are two ways to uninstall Red Baron. If you chose to uninstall Red Baron 2 using the Sierra Utilities (located in the Sierra group) you will uninstall all of Red Baron 2 except the preference files and saved games. If you would like to remove everything associated with Red Baron 2 use the uninstall Red Baron 2 icon found in the Sierra\RedBaronII Group. Both options will leave icons in the Start menu until you reboot the system. - DIRECT DRAW 5 Some video cards may have problems using Direct Draw. If you experience problems running the game in full screen mode, press the keys while in the game to toggle from full screen mode (Direct Draw) to Windowed Mode. You can also change the Window setting in the Preferences Menu within Red baron 2. In the Red Baron 2 main menu, click on preferences and then on graphics. Click on the graphics options button. A graphics preference screen should appear. To change from full screen mode to windowed mode just check the appropriate box under graphics. If you wish to run Red Baron 2 in full screen mode and are having problems, check with your hardware manufacturer for updated display drivers that support DirectX 5. You can also set your display properties to run in 640X480. - GLIDE DRIVERS For 3D acceleration support, Red Baron II requires version 2.43 of the Glide drivers for Voodoo I and 2.51 for Voodoo II. Please note that some Voodoo II cards may require custom drivers. Consult your 3D card manufacturer if you experience problems. - DISPLAY MODES Software rendered mode (Direct Draw and windowed)-- Red Baron 2 supports resolutions up to 1024 x 768 in 256 colors in both Direct Draw and windowed mode. If the 1024 x 768 resolution choice is grayed out when you select Direct Draw, you may only be able to play at that resolution in windowed mode. When playing in windowed mode, for best results we recommend that you set you Windows screen resolution to the same resolution in which you wish to play Red Baron. When playing in software rendered mode, please keep in mind that the resolution you choose can have a significant effect on frame rate. If you are unable to get an acceptable frame rate, consider using a lower resolution. 3D accelerated mode -- If you have a Glide compatible 3DFX based card, the option to play in Glide mode will be available to you in graphics preference. Depending on the texture memory availble on your card, not all resolutions may be available. While you cannot change display modes from within the simulation, you will be able to change resolutions. - Screen Savers Because joysticks do not naturally deactivate screen savers while being used, Red Baron 2 disables your screen saver during game play. This prevents the screen saver from interrupting the game while it is being played. When the game is exited, the screen saver is then set to its previous state prior to the game being started. - JOYSTICKS Calibration In The Game If you are playing in windowed mode a calibration program is available in the game. If you click the right mouse button while in a mission, an option for Calibrate is available in a menu. Click on this option. A program should then start which allows you to select the joystick, calibrate it, and test it. In Direct Draw and Glide mode, this feature has been disabled to avoid problems caused by switching modes. If you are playing in either of these modes, you should calibrate your joystick by using the Joystick or Game Controllers utility found in the Control Panel. Force Feedback Force Feed Back is supported for Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro. All other force feedback joysticks: If you have problems getting force feedback to work properly with Red Baron 2 try using a custom joystick setup for your joystick. In some cases, not using the manufacturers provided joystick driver has enabled force feedback to work for some joysticks. If this does not work, your joystick manufacturer may be able to help resolve the problem. IV. PLAYING THE GAME CHANGES SINCE THE MANUAL WAS PRINTED This section includes changes added in the version 1.5 and 1.6 patches. 1. Flight Model -- An Authentic flight model has been added in addition to the Easy and Intermediate flight models originally in the game. For further information on the new flight model, see the "Flight Model & Glide Info" file listed on the Red Baron Start Menu entry. 2. Views -- Many changes have been made to the view system. There have been a few changes made to the fixed views. Your fixed view will return forward/up 30 degrees when you release the hat position from a different fixed view. For instance, when you press the hat to the right, you'll look right - when you release the hat, your view will return forward. To stay in the view that you choose, use the keypad keys. Button four (4) on your joystick will now toggle between the forward view (F1) and the forward up view (PgUp), instead of firing rockets. Also, looking back (KP2) will no longer toggle left shoulder/right shoulder - it will look straight back along the centerline of the plane. The kneeboard map key has moved from KP5 to KP0, allowing us to put the straight up view at KP5. We have also added 45-degree views with KP7 & KP9 looking forward left and right, and KP1 & KP3 looking back left and right. If you have an 8-way joystick hat, these will automatically work for you. The views and commands that were at the KP1, KP3, KP7, and KP9 have all moved to buttons to the left of the numeric keypad (i.e. KP7/Home in the previous version would advance a page on the kneeboard. Now, just pressing the Home key will do this). You can now look up at a 45-degree angle from any numeric keypad view by holding in the control key. For instance, to look back and up at a 45-degree angle, you'd press Ctrl+KP2. A transparent "phantom" cockpit mode has been added(ALT+t)to make tracking targets easier. Since it can be difficult to keep track of your aircraft's attitude while using padlock or scrollable views, a small set of indicators can be added to the scrollable and padlock views by pressing ALT+i. These indicators consist of a line and a triangle, side by side. The direction the line is pointing represents your pitch of your aircraft relative to the ground. If the line is pointing downward, your nose is pitched down and you are heading at the ground. The triangle represents the attitude of your wings, as viewed from behind and allows you to see how much your aircraft is rolled. Think of the base of the triangle as being your wings and the point indicating up. See NEW CONTROLS at the end of this section of the README document for a printable list of the new view keys and for more information. 3. Promotions -- Promotions are now using a different system. Advancing through the ranks will make more sense (even for German pilots). 4. Medals -- Medals have been limited for the smaller ones (for example, you can no longer get 26 Croix de Guerre's). Other small tweaks have been made. 5. Discipline -- Being disciplined should happen less frequently now. 6. Pilot Damage -- A pilot will no longer bleed to death from a paper cut. Red Baron II is now using a dice-system on wounds, yielding anything from a graze to a shot through the head. Note that you may be able to land an aircraft even with severe wounds, only to have the pilot die of the wounds. 7. Aircraft Damage -- The damage system has been significantly enhanced. Engine damage no longer results in an almost certain loss of power. Engines can now maintain significant damage longer before losing power, and oil leaks take longer to kill an engine. If you have an oil leak and throttle back, you have an excellent chance of nursing your aircraft, if not home, at least to a safe place to land. Fuel leaks are now modeled. Leaking fuel not only lowers your operational range, but also raises the chance of fire. Fires and oil leaks can happen on rare occasions from "golden BBs" hitting a critical area. Damage to the aircraft now causes an increase in drag. If one wing takes heavy damage, the additional drag will cause you to yaw in that direction and lower your top speed. Missing wing sections cause no drag at all. Losing a chunk of wing will cause heavily asymmetric drag, and your aircraft will be nearly impossible to control. 8. Wingmen AI -- Wingmen will now be much more effective and aggressive. Of course, this applies to your enemies, so check 6! 9. Multiplayer -- Many things have been fixed for multiplayer. It should be much more stable and faster. Note that in the "connect" menu, only those options that windows recognizes as installed will be available (if you don't have IPX protocol installed in Win'95, Red Baron II Multiplayer will not give you that option to use. Also note that you don't actually have to have a LAN card to install this protocol). A. Alt-M turns off Shell music now. B. Crossed swords icon on kneeboard shows the center of action. C. Custom paint schemes are allowed in multiplayer (see mppaint.txt for more information). D. Direct-draw has been enabled again. E. Frame-rate improvements. F. Improved mid-air collisions. G. Game options screen changes: log-in name listed along with pilot name and the CPU speed and ping time are displayed. H. Planes now start at 5000 ft above sea level. I. Planes aligned with runway when starting new life. J. Bridges & railyards visible in melee & team melee games. K. Dropped players appear in end-game chalkboard with a star by the name. L. Players should get dropped less often. M. Pilots bail out of planes when player leaves prematurely. N. Building damage should be the same on all machines in a game. O. Planes repaired correctly after starting a new life. P. WON.Net connections closed correctly, so you can play multiple games without shutting down the game. Q. Several game crashes have been addressed. 10. Crashes -- Many reported crashes have been addressed. This includes the crash after the mission debriefer. 11. Rudder Controls -- If you are using rudder pedals and have no throttle, or if you are using a programmable throttle in a mode that emulates keyboard inputs (such as a Thrustmaster (TM) TQS), rudder inputs will not be recognized. To remedy this, make the following change in the rb2sim.ini file, located in the main directory of Red Baron II: [Controls] RudderIsThirdAxis=1 This switches the 3rd and 4th joystick input axes. If you set this when you have a control for both throttle and rudder, it will switch the two. For instance, on a Microsoft Sidewinder (TM) it will make the "twist" axis of the joystick control throttle and the throttle wheel control the rudder. In most cases this isn't desirable, but could have some uses, especially if you are using a second joystick as rudder/throttle control. 11. Additional Options -- Many options have been added to the game since the manual was printed. A. Tracers: You can see your bullet trajectory against dark backgrounds. Whether this means you'll be a better shot remains to be seen... :) B. The screen will shake as you approach a stall as well as when your tail skid is dragging on the ground. C. Time compression automatically turns off when you spot an enemy and when you begin your landing approach. D. You may add an optional gunsight to your inside cockpit forward views. See the rb2sight.txt file for more information. 12. Campaign fixes A. The program will no longer terminate when a squadron accepts your transfer request. B. The "Next Mission Skip/Create" termination has also been resolved. C. Flights will no longer circle endlessly above your starting aerodrome. D. Aces will now stay dead. E. The average altitude of generated campaign missions has been increased. Most missions should take place at 5000ft - 8000ft. F. Gun jams now occur more realistically. AI also unjams guns more fairly. G. The Unjam gun key now works properly for AI as well as the player. 13. Campaign duration (CAMPAIGN.INI)-- This file lets you adjust the number of missions in a campaign. If you'd like to get more (or less) missions each week in a campaign, create a text file in the main RedBaronII directory. In the text file, leave the first line blank, then type: [campaign] missions=??? Replace the ??? with the total number of missions in a career that you want. Save the file as CAMPAIGN.INI in the main RedBaronII directory (where BARON.EXE is). In RB2, the number defaults to 250 possible missions in a whole career. This number is affected by weather, injury, and imprisonment as the career progresses. The frequency of missions depends on the number of missions and the time left in a career. For example, you will have many more missions per week at the default settings if you start a career in 1918 as opposed to a career started in 1916. This is because the missions are spread evenly over the time remaining until Nov 11th, 1918. The maximum number of missions is 2 per day, and the minimum is 1 per week. HINTS AND TIPS The waypoints are time based. If you try to cut corners and get to points early that is why you have to stay in manual or level flight as long as you are "ahead" of time. Remember that parachutes were not given to pilots for fear that they would abandon their plane early. Don't jump out of your plane unless you really need to. Jumping out even in the best of circumstances can lead to a broken ankle, which could lead to an infection and ultimately death. If you are wondering why the terrain detail lowers when you fire your machine guns, it is because Combat Detail is on in the Graphics Preferences. Right clicking in the sim and selecting terrain will allow you to alter this as well. If you have an engine fire, reduce your throttle (or turn off the engine) and go into a dive to blow out the flames. Then keep your throttle low to stop engine overheating and prevent a fire from re-occurring. **Landings** If you wish, you can allow the autopilot to land your aircraft for you. To do this you should be using Combat Autopilot (Ctrl+a) _prior_ to getting the "Cleared to Land" message. The autopilot can usually land you reliably, if your aircraft is undamaged. However, if you enable autopilot when you are too close to landing, or if, after you receive clearance, you disable the autopilot and then re-enable it later, the autopilot may not be able to maneuver your aircraft back into an acceptable approach. This can lead to crashes or to a landing somewhere other than the airfield. Time compress is disabled during the landing cycle. GENERAL GAME ISSUES ------------------------ The on-line manual provides detailed information about the game. In order to successfully complete campaigns and missions you will need to familiarize yourself with using the objectives, keyboard commands, and terminology. The on-line manual is the best way to do this. To access the on-line manual press F1 while in the shell or click on the on-line help manual icon located in the Sierra\Redbaron group. To avoid mode-switching problems when in Direct Draw or Glide mode, the help file will not be available in the sim. Installing Utilities 3rd party utilities are installed with Red Baron in order for the game to work properly. If you do not already have these popular utilities on your system Red Baron 2 will install them. If for some reason these utilities do not install properly the first time you can manually install them from the Red Baron 2 CD-ROM. Intel Indeo(R) is required to run AVI movies in Red Baron 2. To manually install Intel Indeo click on the START button in Windows 95. Once the menu comes up select RUN. In the space provided, type in D:\Indeo\ivi_95nt.exe (where D is the drive letter for your CD-ROM). Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation of Intel Indeo. Microsoft's(R) DirectX 5(TM) is also required to run Red Baron 2. To manually install DirectX 5 click on the START button in Windows 95. Once the menu comes up select RUN. In the space provided, type in D:\DirectX\drivers\DXSETUP.EXE (where D is the drive letter for your CD-ROM). Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation of DirectX 5. Obtaining Patch updates There are many ways to obtain patches for software updates. If you have an internet connection your game will automatically be updated (provided an update is available) when you log into WON.NET. You can also try the Auto Update option available in the Sierra Utilities program that installs with the game. Connecting to our web site at http://www.Sierra.com to download a patch is another option. If you do not have an internet connection you can contact Sierra's technical support. Information on contacting Technical Support is available below. VI.
