Server woes continue 7:58 pm PST

Server access via WON still appears to be having problems for some people for Red Baron 3D Massively Multi-Player.

"Plague" made a post that I thought folks might find helpful on the Sierra Red Baron Forum. This is for those who are having problems finding servers.

"I don't know how many of these are actually active but here is the list that I have collected. If anyone has more please add to the list.

For those that don't know, this list can be pasted in your "mplayer.ini" file located in your C:\sierra\redbaron3d directory."

Should the Wish List return? 9:02 am PST

I received some email from Bill asking if the RB2 Wish List should return. If you think it should, let me know. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to keep it up to date, but it might be fun to see what happened in the past.

You won't be able to add new items for now, at least I don't think so. Way back when it was being updated I ended up putting all the wish list items and Dynamix responses in by hand in order to make the list more useful.

Some of the responses from Dynamix are quite interesting. Especially since some fans have managed to implement some of the features that Dynamix wasn't able too.

Have fun, and enjoy this little bit of Red Baron 2 history.

MMP Server Problems Found 10:40 am PST

Tyler Hart posted this on the Sierra Red Baron Forum Monday. Here it is for those that missed it.

"MMP fix coming -from Dynamix tyler 198.74.38.109 Mon Feb 8 16:05:05

Hi everyone.

We think we've located the problem that's causing all the insanity with the servers. We should have a fix in testing tomorrow and we'll get it out to you as soon as it works.

If this turns out to be it, then I want to make one thing clear: this hasn't been WON's fault. The problem is located in the client software, not the server or metaserver. The WON technical staff has been excellent over the last (rather high-stress) week.

I hear the question: if it's a client problem, why, you ask, didn't it appear til now? Well, we appear to be a victim of our own success. I'm still learning about what the programmers are discovering, but the problem only seems to kick in when the list of servers returned by the metaserver is larger than a certain size. Basically it depends on what size "chunks" the router decides to send you packets in, which is dependent on the size of the document and the routers it goes through - which is why different people have been seeing different things. So, once the list of servers reached a certain size, it started getting chunked differently by various routers, with widely varying results. A very very weird set of symptoms, finally explained!

So, start letting people know that we'll have a small client patch available in a few days. In addition, and this is important, all server operators will need to get an updated cookie file from us so people with the patch will be able to play on their servers (BTW, patched and unpatched people will be compatible on the same servers, if the unpatched people can find the servers that is).

If there's not to be a period of mass confusion, please help me get the word out about this ahead of time, so the server ops can update in a timely fashion. We'll make it super easy.

More info including hopefully a more technical description of the problem ASAP. Thank you all for your perserverance."

MMP Server Problems 7:30 am PST

As many of you know there have been intermittant problems with the independent MMP Red Baron 3D servers showing up via WON this last week or so. Mike P (Ronin) asked this question on the Sierra Red Baron Forum yesterday (Feb 5, 1999).

"As of 2:30 PM Fri (ET) Nothing but WonNet Servers - the usual six when entering straight through MMP.

However when entering through the WOAC Launcher I see the following: Team Melee - 4 WonNet and 4 rogue servers Melee - 1 WonNet and 5 Rogue servers Get the Baron 1 WonNet and 1 Rogue server.

So Mikel or Tyler, simple question, what is going on. Why can we not enter the other servers as we had been previously, directly through the game. Are we gonna now be forced to go through won to see any other servers. If so this stinks.

Mike P (Ronin)"

Tyler Hart from Dynamix responded:

(Mike P): "So Mikel or Tyler, simple question, what is going on?"

(Tyler): "Something's broken at WON. They're working on it like mad. I don't know what's wrong, the reports are all over the place, and for them to stop working long enough to explain it to me in depth would mean it'll take longer to be fixed."

(Mike P): "Why can we not enter the other servers as we had been previously, directly through the game."

Because something's gone wrong.

(Mike P): "Are we gonna now be forced to go through won to see any other servers. If so this stinks."

(Tyler): "Absolutely not. We will get this fixed one way or the other. It's a reasonable suspicion on your part but the answer is unequivocally NO."

Beery's Badge Patch 11:16 am PST

Beery has released his Badge Patch on his Red Baron Page. The file is 2.75 MB in .zip format. The patch -

"... fixes the incorrect badges (British and German) in the Pilot Log, as well as the incorrect German Pilot badge on the medal boxes. It also alters the incorrect French rank listings to their correct names. When used in conjunction with von Tom's Campaign Manager, the British RFC wings will change to RAF wings on April 1, 1918. "

Thanks to Weed for the heads up.

Tips for Improving MMP Connections 3:07am PST

Also on Delphi Flight Sim Forum I noticed a message about WWDart's Guide to Testing Your RB MP Connection. This site has some tips for testing your internet connection for RB3D Massively Multi-Player gaming and a few links to resources for those that have problems.

I've found for internet gaming in general I have much better luck if I disable v.90 and X2/56K.

Of course the best solution is to grab either Internet Cable or Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line service if it's available in your area.

Red Baron Campaign Manager 2:43 am PST

I was visiting the Delphi Flight Sim Forum and noticed that the beta version of von Tom's Red Baron Campaign Manager is now available for download. Here's a snip from his site describing what the program does:

"Red Baron II Campaign Manager is a program that allows you to change various aspects of the game and the campaigns you play in it. It will normally run alongside Red Baron II/3D. It accesses and modifies certain .dat files that are used by RB2, and some functions require you to be in the RB2 Main Menu so as to avoid file sharing conflicts between CM (Campaign Manager) and RB2. (Red Baron stores alot of the shared data in RAM and usually only writes to disk once you are in the Main Menu, or exit the game). Campaign Manager also copies/moves/deletes various RB2 files, and allows you to make backups of your original files."

von Tom's Red Baron Page is also home to some custom terrain graphics and other goodies.
