"I met with Fred Murrin at the League of WWI Aviation Historians seminar in Phoenix last weekend. He lives in Pennsylvania and has a Fokker DrI replica with a LeRhone 80hp rotary. (This summer he plans to replace it with a 120hp LeRhone). Fred gave me the following flight characterics: 1. Controls: Ailerons - Slow roll (compared to modern aircraft) with no appreciable difference between rolling to the right and to the left. Elevator- Very effective Rudder- Very, very Effective. The yaw capable out of this aircraft is staggering. Rudder and Aileron together will give you fast rolls. Yes, he has done the famous flat turn. (However, it does put an unnecessary strain on the engine so he does not like to do it often.) 2. Engine effects: This puppy can really climb! In fact, the combination of the engine and wing causes this thing to always want to climb! Level flight is sustained by holding the nose down! Dives- The only way to dive this aircraft is to shut off the magneto and hold the nose down. The maximum pitch down is 45 degrees." - David Layton/JG1Moritz |
