SoF 2 Patch

Ravensoft's Soldier of Fortune:2 has been my favorite shooter since the demo came out. There are a couple of good servers out there, even for Team Death Match.
According to IGN's SoF:2 News a patch is due out "during the week of July 1st." Here's more: "The update will include a new weapon (MP5SD), a new gametype (Demolition), and four new maps (Kamchatka Factory, Airport Warehouse, Hong Kong Streets, and the Barn). The patch will also fix a number of bugs."

PC Melee is now open in good ol' B-Town. Here's the basics from their web page: "General Prices: $4 PerHour (Non-Members)
Membership Prices: $10 Monthly $3 PerHour (Members)
Hours: 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 10:30 am - 12:30 am"
The only bad is that they are located way out on White Lane - map/directions.

This came out yesterday, but I thought I'd make a mention of it.
The new FPS from the U.S. Army called "Operations is due out on July 4th, according to the official web site.
Parhelia Is A Dog!

The benchmarks are finally revealed with all the pizzazz of an Enron scandal. Across the board, the card is at least 30 fps slower than a GF4Ti4600 and is more expensive at $399... but it has fantastic 2D quality! Check Anandtech or Firing quad for the specifics.
Quarter to Three Revival?

Quarter to Three, one of the more interesting and strange gaming sites out there has returned. Here's the explanation of what happened. "We're back! Tom went on a spiritual odyssey to find the inner Tom and Mark went on spiritual quest to find the perfect beer. Both succeeded. Now Tom is calm, collected, and spiritually centered and Mark is currently unable to get out of bed. We've been busy though. We had something really cool lined up, but it fell through. Let us explain."

Battlefield 1942 will be beta tested by 50 lucky fps geeks soon. Even if you don't get in to the beta test this is great news for those who are looking forward to giving it a whirl.

According to a report at Guru3D, the Matrox Parehelia should hit store shelves on June 18. Expect to lay down around $399 US smackers for the privelege of being one of the first on your block to own one.
MSI Board Arrived

Well the new MSI motherboard that I bought arrived today. Unfortunately I work the next few nights, and then we take off to Wisconsin for the rest of the week to visit some family.
I have to say that the MSI boards sure do look 'purty.
Burning Sensation, CD Backups

Comments
Tom's Hardware has a spiffy article which details the black art of making CD backups and flirts with a review of several CD writing drives. The whole thing is fairly generalized, but it's a good read if you've been burning coasters. In the end, they liked the Clony XXL software suite, and Asus and Lite-On CD-RW drives. Unfortunately, Plextor didn't make the cut.
Another Dead System?

One of the computers that I built for a small local private school appears to have gone belly up. At this point it appears to be a dead iWill KK266Plus-R motherboard.
I've already ordered a replacement MSI VIA KT133A|5P3D TURBO2 motherboard for around $65 from NewEgg.
Microsoft Violates South Korea

Comments
It seems Microsoft sent copies of Visual Studio .NET infected with the Nimda virus to South Korea. It's supposed to be an accident and MS blames a third party which was responsible for translating the software into the Korean language, but it sure would be a nifty way to stick it to a country which neglects copyright laws. Sure Mr. Gates, it's all just a big mistake... (wink).

Combat Flight Sim Site

After posting a request on the SimHQ Forums "Swoose" was kind enough to direct me to a very nice Microsoft Combat Flight Sim site called CFS Pilots.
There is lots of good content at CFS Pilots, including links to plane models for Combat Flight Sim 2. Of special interest to me were some of the WW I add-on planes.
Neverwinter Nights Gold

Comments
I must have missed this, because I'm just not sure how excited I should be about this title. For some reason, my interest in RPG's has faded, as my interest in FPS's has increased.
According to Bioware, Neverwinter Nights has gone Gold as of June 11. Neverwinter Nights "will ship to retail stores under the Company’s Atari label before the end of June." Here is the obligatory screen shot.

Work of Art

I found this case to be quite the work of art. It's given me a few ideas for my own custom case, which I'm starting to think that I'll build from scratch.

For more info head on over to Eugene Sargent's home page.
Online Ordering

Well, I ordered my first few titles from both CompuExpert and EBGames. I also jumped on a few pre-order specials for Warcraft III and Unreal 2003. Prices did vary quite dramatically between the two, with savings of $10-$20, depending on which retailer had the best special.
The first few titles to roll in the door will be Cossacks, and the Cossacks expansion pack. We've been playing Cossacks almost exclusively at our LAN parties at my place, and I thought it was about time that I picked up my own copy.
Local Stores Lack
Cage
@ 12:32
Comments
As some of you might have noticed, I've decided to return the Amazon banner to the top of the page, and I've added my favorite shopping links up near the top as well.
The reason?
I'm just finally fed up with local Computer and Software stores.
Poor service, lazy "I can't hardly be bothered" attitudes, and ignorant sales people have driven me away from supporting local stores. Heck, I'd even be willing to pay MORE for some items to avoid having to deal with some local retailers.
Some software titles have never made it here locally, such as our current LAN title of choice, Cossacks:The Art of War expansion title. As a result I'll be pre-ordering both Unreal 2003 and Warcraft III on-line, as well as most other titles in the future.
Hardware is far more expensive here, and there are far fewer choices when it comes to components. Couple that with a profound ignorance about what they sell, and buying locally just doesn't make sense to me. Local retailers don't deserve or seem to want my hard earned cash, and I'm more then happy to oblige them by shopping elsewhere.
Why put up with lazy, dis-interested attitudes in order to support local stores? I've had it. I will no longer buy locally until I find a retailer more deserving of my business.
Legion Ships

I'm a sucker for classic history war games, and I'm a bit intrigued by Legion, a Roman history war game that has shipped and should show up in stores this week.
What is Legion? Here's a snip from the Legion web site: "Legion is the working title for a revolutionary strategy game based in ancient Rome. At the strategic level the player controls vast armies and must carve an Empire from the assortment of tribes and city states that occupied ancient Italy, Britain and France. At the tactical level the player must position their armies to take advantage of terrain and make use of the best formations, to ensure victory."
