Ziff Davis Bankrupt? Nine11 @ 17:13 Comments

According to the New York Times, Ziff Davis may be going bankrupt. Who knows what'll happen to Computer Gaming World, but I've got that PC Accelerator feeling all over again.

Upgrades Cumpgrades Nine11 @ 9:46 Comments

I've been a little less than impressed with the quality of motherboards and other puter parts over the past year or two. I've been really lucky and got a golden Shuttle AK31 v3 which hasn't had any of the POST or auto-shutoff problems which seem to plague Shuttle boards.

As for other puter parts, I also got lucky and haven't had a PS burn up a sytem yet. I did install an Enermax PS, but almost everyone else I know has sacrificed some PCB to the puter gods as their systems go up in a puff of generic PS smoke. Dodged another bullet.

As for current mobos, I really don't know which I'd toss some money at. A pal at work is looking to upgrade and I love my AK31, but he'd probably get a hootie if I suggested he nab one. He needs to keep the cost down and has a mess of PC-133 SDRAM, so a KT133A chipset mobo would be the best budget-minded choice; however, they're getting pretty rare and the only one which stands out is the MSI KT7 Turbo II. That's the same one Cage's had such poor luck with. Ug!

So, what would you do for a cheap upgrade? I need suggestions for a SDRAM or DDR setup. My pal also wants a hard drive, and to keep things below $300. I think I got a kitchen sink around here too...

SB Audigy Platinum Cage @ 4:58 Comments

Well, when it rains....

I finally got around to picking up MS Flight Simulator 2002 last night. I'd put off buying it, since I haven't been a big fan of civilian flight sims in the past.

Everything seemed to work fine, until I took my first flight. The frame rates were horrible, and the radio chatter/voice instruction was garbled.

I'm pretty sure it must be a driver/configuration problem with FS 2002 and my Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum. I haven't had any other games that have acted up, but I've seen that others have had some problems as well, after doing a quick Google search.

Most likely things will get fixed when I do my motherboard/cpu upgrade in the next few days. I'll start off with a newly formatted HD and OS install, and I'll leave the Audigy behind for one of my secondary systems.

Creative really has put out some poor products in the past. Their tech support has always been suspect, and their driver update process is usually a buggy nightmare. Not to mention that you have to make sure you put the SB cards in the right PCI slot and make sure that it doesn't have any IRQ/DMA conflicts.

Then, of course, you have to make the obigatory sacrifice to the computer gods, cross your fingers, and hope that it all works.

I've had both good and bad luck with Sound Blaster based products. I'm pretty sure that after this experience I won't buy another Creative sound card for quite some time. It's just not worth the hassles that seems to go along with buying Creative.

Aieeeeeee! Cage @ 3:43 Comments

Argh!

Dag 'nab it!

Ok, so there I was, trying to figure out why I couldn't get a system up and running. I'd replaced everything -

  • Power Supply.
  • Video Card.
  • CPU.
  • HD.
  • and finally the motherboard.

Nothing made at difference. The system wouldn't even post.

I finally resigned myself to the likelihood that the motherboard that I'd bought had been defective. All the other components worked just fine when they were swapped into my other almost identical Athlon 1.1 GHz system.

That MSI KT7 Turbo II motherboard sure looked 'purty, but it just didn't want to run. That makes the second MSI motherboard that I've received DOA in the last year. Maybe it's just bad luck, but I'm not sure I'll go that route again.

So I put my other system back together that I'd been using, fire it up, and it boots nicely into Windows. I'm getting a bit hungry, so I decided to drop on over to the local Ralphs to do some grocery shopping.

When I get back, I notice that the system I'd just put back together was off. Hmmm....not good. Oh yeah, I bet you can all see what's coming next.

I am now the proud owner of an Athlon keychain. Woohoo! I can now join the good lads at [H]ard OCP and others in the "Burnt Athlon" club.

It seems that the clip on the cpu cooler popped off, and the rest was history. Sizzle sizzle pop.

I swapped in another Athlon 1.1 GHz cpu, so at least I can take some time to think about what to do next.

One option is to consider doing a system upgrade. I'd been thinking about it for awhile, and all I really would need would be a new motherboard and cpu. I'm quite tempted to go the Intel P4 route.

In any case, time is a ticking. If I order any parts, I want to have them by the time I'm done with my next stretch at work. Decisions, decisions.

It just burns me....uhhh, ok, maybe that's not the best choice of words.

All right. Here we go. Maybe this better describes my feelings.

In the immortal words of my HS Physics teacher, "That really torques me off!"

    ASUS Ti4200 Deluxe Nine11 @ 6:15 Comments

[H] popped off a review of the very impressive and budget minded ASUS Ti4200 V8420 Deluxe. Like my favorites from Gainward, ASUS' part comes slightly overclocked but also sports 128MB 3.3ns DDR memory. Stock core/mem speeds are 260/550, but [H] got the card to groove at 310/640. Of course, individual milage will vary but 600MHz memory should be a given since the included 3.3ns stuff is rated at that speed. Here's a few calculations [H] performed:

      (4ns) 1000 / 4 x 2 = 500 MHz
      (3.6ns) 1000 / 3.6 x 2 = 556 MHz
      (3.3ns) 1000 / 3.3 = 606 MHz

Overclocking was achieved on their review sample by using the CoolBits Registry hack, so OCing isn't as brainless as it is on similar Gainward parts. Overall, if I was looking to buy a budget card today, the ASUS V8420 Deluxe would be at the top of my list.

    Far Cry Nudies Nine11 @ 5:54 Comments

FiringSquad got some nudies of CryTek Studio's Far Cry, which runs on the CryENGINE, which is so purty it makes you wanna cry! CryTek also did the dinosaur tech demo for Nvidia, so these screens sure have that killer look but I wonder how they'll feel in-game.

    Hockey Manager Nine11 @ 5:47 Comments

G-Spot got the skinny on Sports Interactive's Eastside Hockey Manager: Franchise Edition. This is a follow-up to a freely downloadable Eastside Hockey Manager, which was released in 2000 but has roster updates through the 01/02 season. Being a hockey fan and critical of the LA Kings management, I wonder how well the Kings would've done last season if they held onto Luc Robitalle and broke the bank on Brett Hull...

    Being Colin McRae Nine11 @ 5:29 Comments

EuroGamer got some poop on Codemaster's Colin McRae Rally 3. The game will hit the consoles first, but will eventually slide onto the PC. A career mode has been added with more interaction between you (Colin McRae) and the pit crew. Other spit-n-shine has been applied to the graphics and physics engine, and rally cars will have their polys boosted from 800 to 1,300.

SoF:2 MP Cheating Spreading? Cage @ 5:17 Comments

Well it looks like SoF:2 is going to get circular filed for me. Aimbots, wallhacks, health and damage modifiers, etc. have arrived in multiplayer.

Just like I won't be spending any of my own $ locally on games (see previous rant(s) about customer service and prices), I think I'm about to move to only playing either single player or MMPOG's which have good anti-cheat control.

It's bad enough trying to find a quality open server with a reasonable ping. When the servers start getting over run by losers with hack programs then it's time to move on.

Nine11 says: I already made the move to single player games a few months ago. Partly, the lack of any new online games and my serious addiction to Dungeon Siege kicked me offline, but I'm pimping my DS character (Mr Muerte) for online play or a good run through the MP maps. I also dig the story behind some single player games which are much deeper than "kill everyone" or "nab da flag, ya fag!" I will reach out and ping someone whenever UT2K3 hits the scene, but I'll be flying solo till then.

    UT2003 Hits Da G-Spot Nine11 @ 10:38 Comments

G-Spot got a little quality time to chat up Unreal Tournament 2003 with Digital Extreme's Pancho Eekels and Epic's Cliffy B. There's not too much new, unless you've been in a coma, but I got the distinct feeling some fat has been trimmed so they could kick the game out the door and concentrate on the Xbox Live launch and Unreal Championship. This isn't exactly a gloomy picture on the same scale as Halo, but some cool game modes like Assault have been nixed and vehicles aren't implemented. However, there is a vehicle buried in there and will probably be fleshed out by the mod community... probably the same guys who'll bring Assault back... Assault with vehicles... kinda like Rat Patrol... that would be cool... can you tell I like periods? Anyway, the other tidbit I walked away with is the poor bastard system specs. Check 'em.

To get the most out of the game, with a minimum budget in mind, I would personally get a 1.4Mhz Pentium 4 or Athlon with a Geforce4 Ti 4200 or better. Make sure it says "Ti" and not "MX," as there is a big difference in performance between the two.

Corporate Americal Still Brain Dead Nine11 @ 17:44 Comments

I purchased some Memorex CD-R discs at the local ChumpUSA a few months ago. After the discounted price, instant savings, and mail-in rebate, it was a good deal. The mail-in rebate was only worth $5, but it bothered me ChumpUSA didn't stock any rebate slips. I figured it wasn't a big deal and would just print a rebate form from Memorex's web site, but they didn't have one either. Normally, I'd just drop things there because it's always a roll of the dice when mail-in rebates are concerned, but I was already on Memorex's site and decided to fill out a Customer Service form. Here's my question:

I puchased the Memorex CD-R 24X 30 Pack product number 3202 4565 blank media at CompUSA, but they did not have any mail-in rebate forms for the advertised product on sale ($11.99 - $2 instant savings - $5 mail-in rebate). I was hoping to find a rebate form on the Memorex web site. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

    And here's their reply:

...In order for me to research your rebate question thoroughly and get a rebate check back to you ASAP, please kindly include via Mail, E-Mail or Fax the following:

      1) Store Receipt
      2) Rebate Form
      3) UPC

Warcraft III Hits 1 Million Sold Cage @ 8:48 Comments

According to a press release cited on HomeLAN, Blizzard has sold over 1 million copies of Warcraft III, making it "the fastest selling PC game ever surpassing Blizzard's own games of Diablo II and its expansion pack, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction."

    Whew!

Hopefully you were not one of those that plunked down $60 to grab this beast when it first came out. I'm still not sure if I will pick it up, but I doubt it will get much cheaper then $40 any time soon.

Is That Really World War II Online? Cage @ 8:44 Comments

When Will it All End?? Cage @ 8:21 Comments

For the love of Mike, when will it all end?!!

Once again, CD-RW's are blazing new frontiers when it comes to speed, which is a sure sign that the technology is going to be replaced soon. Anyone remember the 72x Kenwood CD drives?

Ok, here's the relevant gank from Guru3D.
"A 52/24/52 CD-ReWriter from Ultima Electronics has just been announced. It reaches 52X writing, 24X re-writing and 52X reading speeds. The drive uses CAV recording technology and JustLink an the main buffer underrun technology."

    ATI Radeon 9700 Nine11 @ 8:04 Comments

[H] seems to have an [H] for the new ATI Radeon 9700. They got some quality time with the new part and played some Q3A, JKII, RTCW, and MoH. I'm still a little nervous about the ATI drivers, but here's the man meat:

ATi’s Radeon 9700 delivered the most enjoyable gaming experience we have ever had on a PC. It is undoubtedly the speed king as we have seen it top GeForce4 Ti4600 scores in the last few days from between 25% to 300%. ATi is claiming double the performance of the nearest competition, and they can certainly prove that on more than just a couple of benchmarks. It is ATi’s turn to wear the crown and their hard work on the R300 over the last 18 months surely shows as they are bringing a product to market that they should be fully proud of...

...All in all, the Radeon 9700 is absolutely the best gaming card that money can buy and ATi has committed to start shipping cards in 30 days. They have earned their moment in the spotlight and deserve kudos from the gaming community. Speaking with Dave Orton, the COO of ATi, he seemed more excited about the next product after this so he could push their R300 core into the mainstream. It just keeps getting better and better and there really is no end in sight. The Radeon 9700 is the dawn of a new era in gaming, and a very welcomed one at that.

    BakersfieldLAN.NET Cage @ 19:16 Comments

It appears that the boys behind BakersfieldLAN have not gone quietly into the night as first feared. Reportedly last month or so someone who worked for them grabbed the domain name BakersfieldLAN.com. The folks at BakersfieldLAN were understandably quite upset.

There is a "demo" for EA's/Digital Extreme's Battlefield: 1942 that was released last night and that will appear on a magazine demo disc soon.

New Civ III Patch Cage @ 16:16 Comments

Gamespot is reporting that there is a new patch for Civilization III. Actually, according to Apolyton, a Civ III site, the patch is labeled version 1.29f, and is due out this Friday, July 19.

The readme.txt for the patch can be found in this thread at Apolyton. It's rather lengthy, but seems to reflect a bunch of changes to the editor, and some more quashing of bugs, as well as some new game options.

Water Cooled Notebook Cage @ 16:09 Comments

This caught my eye over on HardOCP. Hitachi is releasing a water cooled notebook computer.

Here's a snip from the ITworld article:
"The solution can last for more than five years, the flexible tube can circulate the solution over 20,000 times and the pump works for more than 44,000 hours, the statement said."
That service on it sounds like a pain, but it would be quieter. The system features a 1.8GHz mobile Pentium 4.

ATI Makes You It's Bitch Cage @ 7:23 Comments

Harking back to the good ol' Daikatana days, it looks like ATI is making everyone it's biatch with the official announcement of the Radeon 9700.

Benchmarks look quite impressive. AnandTech's review of the Radeon 9700 compares the 9700 to the Nvidia 4600 while running Unreal Tournament 2003. Here's a snip:
"Finally, at 1600x1200 the Radeon 9700 can play Unreal Tournament 2003 at the highest detail settings just fine; the R300 manages to outperform the fastest GeForce4 by an incredible 54%."
    Ouch!

AnandTech used a Pentium 4 2.4B system with 256MB of PC800 RIMM's to get those numbers.

Halo PC, Day Late & Dollar Short Nine11 @ 11:07 Comments

Well, more like two years late. According to the G-Spot, Halo will limp to both the PC and Mac next summer. The few PC gamers who still give a damn about this game should have plenty of fun smackin' those single-button mouse freaks. Remember, in OS X, no one can hear you scream!

American Conquest Open Beta Cage @ 10:41 Comments

    Here's the skinny:

    Apple Switch Parody Nine11 @ 8:30 Comments

Cage sent me this little ditty, so I thought I'd pass it along to you. It's a take on the recent Apple ad campaign which has a mess of every day people who switched to the Apple because they were too brain dead to use a PC. Quotes like "I just didn't get it" and "I bought a PC because my parents made me" are what Apple thinks is a convincing argument for their designer puters; however, they forgot (or avoided) gaming on the Mac... and that's gotta be a killer reason to switch, right? If you have any doubts, check out the Apple Switch Parody over at DrunkGamers.com.

As long as I'm beating up on Apple, here's the power you get for $2300:

    933MHz PowerPC G4
    256K L2 cache
    & 2MB L3 cache
    256MB SDRAM memory
    60GB Ultra ATA drive
    SuperDrive
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
    56K internal modem

Heck, for that price I could build 3 or 4 of those and still have money left over to buy Super Breakout! Sheesh...

Site Tweaking Cage @ 2:21 Comments

I made a few site tweaks, and changed a few things that had been bugging me for some time.

First of all, you no longer have to register in order to post or view the forum. I never meant to leave it that way, but I'd just never got around to fixing it.

Secondly, a "comments" tag next to each news item will let you go directly to the forum. There are a couple of reasons for doing it that way, one of them being that it seems silly to run a comment system that is seperate from a more full fledged forum, since they basically duplicate the same thing.

I've also added back in a "New Links" heading at the top, and seperated out the "Shops" heading. Just an FYI, the shops that I've listed are the ones that I use and recommend to others - no hidden agenda there. The Amazon banner ad has never brought in any money, but I've left it there just for my own conveinance.

I've continued to update the links section off to the right border on this page. If I remember, I'll try to be a bit better about posting something about links that I add or drop in the future.

That's it for now. Until the next "Tweak"

    ATI R300 Out July 17? Cage @ 23:31 Comments

nVNews points to a likely July 17 announcement from ATI about their latest video card, the R300. The R300 should spec out substantially faster then NVidia's GeForce 4 4600. That should put some pressure on NVidia to push their next generation NV30 based card out sooner then expected. Ya gotta love competition.

CombatSim Battlefield: 1942 Preview Cage @ 18:30 Comments

Around a month ago I was so desperate for a good combat sim news site that I decided to go back and look at CombatSim, a very popular Combat Sim news site that went to the subscription model awhile back.

While the site does not seem to have the sheer volume of news that some free sites have, it does have some high quality articles that are well worth the price.

A publically viewable preview of the Battlefield:1942 closed beta is now up at CombatSim, and is well worth the look. It puts most other previews to shame. It's very well written, and is stuffed full of details and impressions about the game. There are also some new screen shots to boot.

    NV30 at [H] Rumors Cage @ 3:52 Comments

[H]ard OCP had a quickie the other day about the NV30. Here's the whole enchilada:
    "Rumor Mill:
Guys talk, you hear things....We had stated in another edition of the Rumor Mill a few weeks back that NVIDIA's NV30 had "come back" from the fab at .15 instead of .13. Of course, that is oversimplifying a drawn out process, but we were still apparently wrong. Just another reason why you should never trust the Rumor Mill 100%. I know we don't. Anyway, word on the street this week is that NVIDIA will be launching their NV28 core to satisfy this upcoming product cycle. From what we can gather, the NV28 will pretty much be a hopped up GeForce4 Titanium series core that will take advantage of 8X AGP. Little information beyond that is worth posting.

Lastly the Rumor Mill is saying this week that the NV30 chipset had not been taped out yet and will not be till next week, but will surely be at .13 micron and will make the Christmas buying season.

Remember this is all just rumor and speculation and should all be taken with a grain of salt...and possibly a beer as well."

    - [H]ard OCP.

    NV30 Date? Cage @ 3:43 Comments

I saw this over on Guru3D.
"Noticed this bit on nVnews regarding NV30 (GeForce 5) Dave Baumann has furnished more details from yesterday's shareholder meeting, which he yanked from the Motley Fool.

They mentioned the NV30 several times, and showed references to it on several slides. One of the slides showed a schedule for chip releases, and it showed the NV18 and NV28 showing up in what appeared to be the August/Sept time frame, and NV30 appearing in Oct/Nov (approximate, the slide was marked in quarterly increments). The slide also mentioned how many transistors were on each chip:

    NV18: 81 million
    NV28: 86 M
    NV30: 120 M

They stated that they thought the NV30 was going to be the biggest revolution in 3D graphics in the last 10 years.

At a later part of the presentation, they stated that NV30 was on TSMC's 0.13um process that had copper interconnects. It was an FSG process (i.e. no low-k dielectrics were being used). I believe that Jen Hsun said the only part coming this Fall that was 0.13um was the NV30, the other parts are 0.15um. Also, the NV30 would fully support DX9." - nV News.

Note: The original quote appears to be from a forum thread on Beyond3D.

    SoF:2 Patch Out Cage @ 17:56 Comments

Just a quickie - gotta run to work.

The new SoF:2 patch is out! I grabbed mine from ShackNews.

The download is 12.1MB, and includes some new multiplayer maps as well as other fixes. Here's a list of what's new from SoF Center.
"This patch will upgrade you SoF2 version to 1.01. Here's an excerpt from Activision:
The response to Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix has been terrific, and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiastic support of the product. As with all of our major new product releases, the product team has been closely monitoring the SoFII newsgroups, Web sites, and forums to gauge what our users are experiencing with the product. From these sources and a number of emails, we have addressed some issues that were identified after the product’s release.

These are the changes/improvements included in this patch:
    Single Player:

    - Fixed rotating brushes to load/save properly.
    - Fixed several NPC animation issues where the AI would become stuck reloading, firing while leaning, or picking up weapons.
    - Fixed kam3 navpoint bug.
    - Fix for player dying for no apparent reason in shop6.
    - Fix for col8 occasionally not ending.
    - Allow editing and saving of navpoints so Modders can make SP levels.
    - 3-button mouse w/o mousewheel will now work.
    - NPCs have a difficult time seeing you when you are crouched or prone in tall grass. They will still, however, investigate the nearby area the player was last seen.
    - Stun grenades have a greater affect on NPCs.
    - Moving while crouching being regarded as running is now fixed
    - Fixed crash in menus when background image wasn't found.
    - Timegraph and mousemove graph now display blue and green lines on a black background rather than black on a black background
    - Added new video card cfgs.

    Multiplayer:

    - Demolition gametype added.
    - MP5SD weapon added.
    - 4 new maps added.
    - Fix for demo playback.
    - RMG fixes for reliable connectivity to Linux dedicated servers.
    - Small leaning bug fixed.
    - MODs menu added to main screen to show list of installed MODs.
    - Fix for time display in game logs.
    - Exploit to get around limited enemy following was fixed.
    - Buffer overrun fixed for team say in certain cubes on the raven map.
    - Player will no longer slow down when walking through a puddle.
    - When playing a demo back the objectives screen no longer pops up.
    - "Use" key bind added for demolition gametype.
    - "Drop item" key bind added to allow people to drop the flag, briefcase, or bomb.
    - Should no longer be dropped off a server with "invalid pk3" message on map changes.
    - Added "logfilename" server cvar to allow admins to specify the name of the qconsole.log file.
    - Added "g_roundjointime" server cvar to allow the amount of time someone can join a round in progress in inf or dem.
    - Added "g_suddenDeath" server cvar to allow control of whether a match should end if tied.
    - Added "banip", "banclient", "banremoveip", and "banlist" server commands. New ban system allows up to 4096 bans and stores the bans in the file sof2mp.ban by default.
    - Fire damage caused by walking through a fire grenade does not cause TK damage (initial blast does though).
    - Gametype modders can now base their mod off another to use its entities and spawns.
    - Server’s status request no longer shows the score of the client when someone is spectating them.
    - Server’s status request now reports the team scores.
    - Server’s status request now contains each client’s current team.
    - Fire grenades don’t slow you down as much when you run through them.
    - Death messages no longer disappear after a map change.
    - Grenades that fall after being killed trying to throw one no longer cause team kill damage.
    - Team kill damage should now forgive properly.
    - Added hud indicators for CTF flag status.
    - IP address added to server log file when someone connects.
    - Entity func_wall added for demolition gametype.
    - Entity target_effect added for demolition gametype.
    - Ability to ban people for a given duration of time added.
    - New server cvar "g_teamkillBanTime" which specifies the number of minutes you are banned for after being autokicked for team killing (default 5 minutes).
    - New server cvar "g_voteKickBanTime" which specifies the number of minutes you are banned from the server after being vote kicked (default 0).
    - Guns will no longer glow white in RMG fog when detail textures are on.
    - Pause when clients join a team has been fixed.
    - Servers will now exclude color-coding when sorting in the in-game browser
    - Jump action should jump off ladders properly now
    - Next and prev weapons (mousewheel by default) will now double as zoom in and zoom out when in zoom mode (can be turned off)
    - Death messages now include the weapon name that did the killing"

I Was Just Trying to Tell Your Future! Cage @ 20:55 Comments

Hey, I was just trying to tell your future!
"A blind German psychic claimed Tuesday he could read people's futures by feeling their naked buttocks.

Clairvoyant Ulf Buck, 39, claims that people's backsides have lines like those on the palm of the hand, which can be read to reveal much about their character and destiny." - Yahoo News

New ATI Card to Hit 15000 on 3DMark? Cage @ 15:35 Comments

According to The Inquirer ATI's soon to be released ATI’S Radeo 9700 will hit 15,000 on 3DMark. Here's the relevant snip:
"As for performance, we learned that cards based on the 9700 should deliver a magnificent 15,000 3DMarks and will be able to beat Nvidia’s fastest offering for this summer by a few thousand in this very popular test. Nvidia’s best performance is between 10,000 and 11,000 depending on the configuration."
The article goes on to say that the cards are rumored to be out in September. I've seen other sources say that much more information should be available in the next few weeks, which points to an upcoming expiration on some kind of ATI NDA.

GPU Shootout Part 2 at AnandTech Cage @ 15:29 Comments

Anandtech now has the follow up to their previous video card shootout that used several Unreal Tournament 2003 demos.

GPU Shootout with Unreal Tournament 2003 Part II: CPU Scaling.

    Here's the bottom line:
"What’s also interesting to note is that if you extrapolate based on this data then you’ll see that the forthcoming generation of GPUs will need even more powerful processors than an Athlon XP 2100+ in order to get the most out of their performance. With AMD slowly ramping the clock speed of the Athlon XP line between now and Hammer’s release, it looks like we’ll be testing R300 and NV30 on Pentium 4 systems."
The article is a great read, though the charts are a little hard to make out this time around.

    NHL 2003 Screenies Cage @ 15:16 Comments

ToTheGame has some new screenshots of NHL 2003 up at their site. I was a bit disappointed that none of the shots showed off any hard cross checks or sticks to the head. Damn it, this is hockey, not some namby pamby girly game.....heheheh.

Nine11 is a big NHL fan, so you will have to wait to see how he smacks this one around to get the real skinny on it.

    Junkyard 1942 Info Cage @ 16:26 Comments

The Junkyard's interview with the Battlefield: 1942 Team has some interesting tidbits:
"tJY: Will the campaigns be able to be played "co-op" over the Internet?

BF1942 Team: All 16 maps can be played as co-op over the internet. We are still testing, but it looks as though you will be able to take 32 bots into a level and as players jump into the co-op game, bots are removed. "

    Battlefield 1942 Previews Cage @ 15:10 Comments

GameSpy has a preview of Battlefield:1942, a much anticipated title due out from EA and developer Digital Illusions.

I found the control scheme to be of interest. Here's a snip from the preview:
"The planes are probably the most difficult vehicles in the game to get the hang of, but worth the effort to learn. The forward/back keys handle your throttle, the left and right keys will turn the plane, and then you can either use the mouse or the arrow keys to dive, climb, and bank to the left or right. Although players seem to be split in their preferences, I found the keyboard a bit easier, although this style makes it a bit awkward to fire machineguns or drop bombs."

I suspect if you really wanted to you could maybe configure a programmable joystick to handle those functions, but then you would have to swap them over once you hit the ground, which would be a bit clumsy. Tribes 2 had the same type of system, and I hated it.

Battlefield:1942 is already in a closed beta, so I suspect it should be out in the next month or so.

Game Revolution's preview from E3 also has some nice screen shots that I haven't seen before, that show off some first person point of view action.

And to round things off, here are some screenies from the official Battlefield:1942 site:

    TRUSTcompany Nine11 @ 8:23 Comments

I've been fortunate enough to find a few bands over the past couple of years which end up in heavy rotation in my CD/MP3 collection. I stumbled upon TRUSTcompany a few weeks ago and really dig their sound. They're similar to Linkin Park but (in my opinion) have a more mature sound, more harmony, and no rap. That's not better or worse, just different. TRUSTcompany's album will debut on the 23rd, so give 'em a listen.

Another Defective Power Supply Cage @ 23:19 Comments

Well it looks like I have another defective/dead power supply to blame for another dead system. As some of you might recall, I had built 2 PC's for a small local school in Shafter. Both of them have now had power supplies that have failed.

I'll pick up another power supply locally, swap it in, and see if the motherboard is stil alive, or if it died when the power supply failed.

The strange thing was, the computer did power up when I received it for repair, but it wouldn't POST, much less boot. I could hear the fan turn on, but that was all.

The same thing happened with the previous system, and swapping out the power supply was all that was needed. I did a temporary swap with an Enermax power supply from one of my other systems, and it booted right up. Go figure.

So here is the offending case. It's the third case from this manufacturer that has failed that I know of. Nine11 had one fail as well. As they say, you get what you pay for.

    SoF:2 Server Stats Cage @ 4:01 Comments

One of the servers that I play Soldier of Fortune:2 on has a web page with server stats on it. The pages use a program called AEStats, a nifty little program that keeps track of a ton of different stats for several different games.

I was happy to see that my alter ego was ranked #7, not too bad for an old man.

Cossacks: Back to War Expansion Pack Cage @ 3:54 Comments

Some new info and screenshots from the next Cossacks expansion pack is now available on the official Cossacks web site. The expansion pack will be called Cossacks: Back to War, and is due out in the second half of 2002.

Unreal Tournament 2003 Movies Cage @ 3:34 Comments

The German web site Giga.DE has posted up several new movies of the Unreal Tournament 2003 Press beta in action. As always, it looks like UT2K3 will have plenty of eye candy. I snapped some screenies from the movies for those who have a hard time downloading the files.

    bit-tech Does Belkin Wireless Networking Nine11 @ 8:40 Comments

bit-tech popped off an infomercialish review of the Belkin wireless networking equipment. It's actually pretty good, but the infomercial stuff started running through my head after a few pages. Anyway, it's got da BLING and won't set you back much if ordered online. I'll be looking at this stuff when my wife's puter is up and runnin'.

    Water Cooling Flick Nine11 @ 8:18 Comments

Tom's Hardware Guide has a 17MB water cooling flick for download. Man, they sure make it look like a piece of cake! The kit they used has self-contained parts which don't require any silicone for a water-tight seal. The English flick doesn't have any spoken words, but there are some subtitles which list the parts and steps in building the system. It's pretty slick, even if you already know how to do this stuff. Just don't blink because it moves through the steps at a fairly fast clip.

There's an article which goes along with the flick, which you can find here.
