Introduction
The year is already half over, and so far
it's been a mixed bag for gamers. Flight sims fans had little to cheer about
after the cancelation of several projects. RPG fans are just now starting to
reap a bonanza of high quality titles such as Diablo 2, IceWind Dale, and the
EverQuest expansion pack Ruins of Kunark. Sim fans have Sim City Unlimited.
Strategy fans have had several mediocre titles, but nothing that stands
out.
Here's a look at what I consider to be
some of the most interesting titles that have yet to be released in 2000. They
are listed in order of interest to me.
Tribes
2
Tribes has always featured wide open
spaces and great team play. New to Tribes 2 is a greater variety of vehicles
and a more refined physics engine.

Less twitch oriented players can find
enjoyment just by building or repairing team defenses. Of course there will be
plenty of new eye candy and a more dynamic environment. You can find some very
cool .avi
movie files on the official
Tribes 2
Site.
Mech Warrior
4
Mech Warrior 3 proved to be a big
disappointment for the fans of the classic Mech Warrior 2 game. Things look to
improve dramatically with the late 2000 release of Mech Warrior 4.

I got a chance to see a beta of Mech
Warrior 4 in action at this year's E3 show. It was quite impressive. The whole
game felt faster and more action oriented. Control of the mechs seemed to be
easier then in the past. I saw one Microsoft employee using a mouse in
combination with the keyboard to great effect. A more immersive story line and
gorgeous graphics make this one a must have for any Battle Tech fan.
You can find more information on the
official Microsoft Mech
Warrior 4 site.
Baldur's Gate
2
Baldur's Gate 2 brings back more of the
same except bigger and better. Those who are looking for a well developed story
line, and the chance to play a group of characters should not be disappointed
by this fantasy role playing game epic.

As an added incentive you may import
characters from the previous Baldur's Gate expansion Tales of the Sword Coast.
Release is targeted for Fall, 2000. For more information visit the
official Baldur's Gate 2 web
site.
Age of Empires:
Conquerors
Another sure fire Microsoft hit is
Conquerors, an expansion for Age of Empires. Conquerors adds 5 new
civilizations and a host of long awaited feature updates to AOE.

Improved unit Artifical Intelligence,
formation handling, and queing will hopefully make this a less frustrating game
then it's predecessors. Of course there will still be an option for on-line
play via Microsoft's Zone where AOE remains
quite popular. The official AOE:Conquerors web
site is now up. Expected release date is August 25, 2000.
