Cable Internet Rocks
Cage
@ 14:22
Yes, Time Warner's Cable Internet service is up and running at my place as of this last Monday. The only glitch was a bad/corroded connector at the box on the street. Once that was fixed everything was golden. I did miss out on getting any sleep that day, and I had to work that night. Even though I was up for 48+ hours and dead tired, it was worth it.
At the time that I got it installed I was told that there were approximately 170+ folks that were up and running on Road Runner in town. As of Monday there were approximately 1700 poor souls still on the waiting list to be hooked up.
Installation Date

I finally received notification that I could schedule an appointment for my Road Runner Internet Cable service. I called up the number that I was given, and the installation folks will be coming out this Monday between 9 am and 1 pm.
DSL Not Available

Argh.
I checked on my phone number, and I'm too far out even after Pac Bell's latest upgrade for DSL service.
The rep did mention something interesting. Pac Bell will be rolling out a new service in the next 1-1 1/2 years called "Pronto." It will put fiber optic cable close to the house and then run copper in the rest of the way.

I updated my links to the new Pacific Bell DSL page. It's at http://www.pacbell.com/DSL/1,1877,,00.html?site_code=PCB
DSL Now Available in NW Bakersfield

I just caught this gem in today's Bakersfield Californian. "More than 20,000 Pacific Bell customers throughout Delano, Rosedale and Oildale now have an opportunity to surf the information superhighway faster through an expansion of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology by Pacific Bell."
and
"For more information on DSL service contact Pacific Bell's Emerging Product Center at (888) 884-2375. The company is offering a special promotion through April 30."
- Bakersfield California Interesting, eh?
No doubt this has a lot to do with the fact that Time Warner Cable is just now offering it's Road Runner cable Internet service to the same area.
Road Runner Backlog

I called Time Warner this morning, and "yes, Road Runner service is now available - but there is a backlog of over 1200 people."
Rats. I've already received email confirming that I'm on the list, so I'll just have to be patient and wait my turn.
Road Runner Available April 12?

Yep, that's right. Time Warner's Road Runner Cable Internet service became available April 12 in Bakersfield. Here's the blurb from the local RR page:
Bakersfield, Rosedale, Shafter/Wasco and Arvin/Lamont
"Time Warner Cable's RoadRunner On-line service will be available in the above TWC service areas starting April 12, 2000."
- Road Runner Bakersfield.
Argh! Well I guess I'll have to call them up and see if it's so today.
